Quick scouting read

Limited sample

Only 2 attempts are available for the period shown, too few to establish a reliable shooter/deker tendency. All 2 recorded shot types are wrist or snap shots, with no backhands; the median recorded release is about 19 ft from the center of the net.

How approach is measured

Video estimates use the player's median sideways position between the blue line and 20 ft from the goal line. Center means within 4 ft of the rink's middle; left and right describe the main approach lane, even if the player cuts across later. Only tracks passing automatic quality checks count, with at least 5 observed positions spanning 15 ft and no gap over 0.4 seconds. Partial, uncertain and missing tracks stay unclassified. These are estimates from available videos, not complete career tendencies; small samples can produce extreme scoring rates.

How to read this

These are likely finish styles, not confirmed moves. Backhands suggest a deke; wrist and snap shots within 8 ft of the goal line suggest a close finish, while releases at least 13 ft out suggest a shot. The distance in between stays unclear. Slap shots count as shots; missing or unsupported data stays unclear unless the shot type alone supports a read.

The breakdown includes every attempt, including unclear finishes. Shot type is available for 2; usable release locations for 2. Profiles need at least 8 attempts and 60% classified; a lean needs at least twice as many estimates of one style as the other. A release location cannot reveal the approach side, fakes, or the target in the net. No backhands in this period does not mean a player never dekes.

Career scoring patterns use 4 fixed comparisons: backhands versus wrist and snap shots combined; far versus close releases overall; far versus close wrist and snap releases; and likely shots versus likely dekes. Far means at least 13 ft in front of the goal line, close means within 8 ft, and the distance in between is excluded from distance comparisons. Unclear finishes are excluded from shot/deke comparisons.

Both groups need at least 10 attempts. Shot-type comparisons require 80% recorded types, overall distance comparisons require 80% usable locations, and shot/deke comparisons require 80% classified finishes. Wrist/snap distance comparisons require both shot-type coverage and that location coverage within wrist/snap attempts. Each coverage check applies separately to goals and unsuccessful attempts; at least 80% of all attempts must have a known result. Unknown outcomes and finishes without a recorded release are excluded.

We show only the strongest comparison with a scoring-rate gap of at least 20 percentage points and a two-sided Fisher exact p-value below 0.05 after Holm adjustment across all comparisons meeting the sample and coverage requirements for that player. The adjustment includes comparisons with small scoring-rate gaps. These are historical associations, not proof of which move will work next.
